After weeks and weeks of preparation, the members of the Philippine Boxing Team now know what it will take for them to achieve Olympic glory in Paris. This is after the draw ceremony was completed at the North Paris Arena on July 25 at 7:30 p.m. Paris time (July 26, PHL)

Five Filipino boxers qualified for Paris 2024 but only one was seeded in the top-8 as a continental qualifier in Eumir Marcial.

“No bracket is easy in the Olympics,” said Marcus Manalo, Secretary General of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines. “With four of our boxers unseeded, this means they will have to go up against seeded opponents early.”

Marcial drew a bye in the Round of 32 but he will have to take on killers the rest of the way. He has a tough Round of 16 match against Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medalist Turabek Khabibullaev of Uzbekistan.

If victorious, Marcial will then meet Oscar Lopez of Cuba, a two-time Olympic medalist, in the quarterfinals. Another win there would give Marcial a guaranteed bronze medal and a possible meeting with Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak, the fighter who defeated him in Tokyo 2022.

The opposite side of the bracket has Tanglatihan Tuohetaerbieke of China, who took the gold away from Marcial in Hangzhou.

Carlo Paalam – Men’s 57kg

The Philippines’ bet in the men’s 57-kg weight division had a lucky break in the draw. A seeded boxer, Ethiopia’s Fikremariam Yadesa Leta, was scrapped from the competition as his team “failed to present relevant documentation,” said an official communication from the organizers.This opened up the fifth seed in the draw and the spot was randomly assigned to Carlo Paalam. Landing straight into the Round of 16, Paalam only needs two wins to medal in Paris. He takes on Jude Gallagher of Ireland first.

If victorious, he’ll face off against the winner between European champion Vasile Usturoi of Belgium or Charlie Senior of AustraliaIf Paalam survives, the next fight becomes a lot tougher as he will meet Abdumalik Khalokov in the semifinals. The bet from Uzbekistan defeated Paalam in all rounds and in all five judges’ scorecards in Hangzhou.

Jahmal Harvey of the USA and Javier Ibanez of Bulgaria are expected to be the survivors of the other side of the bracket.

Hergie Bacyadan – Women’s 75kg

Arguably the toughest draw from the Filipino contingent belonged to Hergie Bacyadan.

With only 16 entries in the division, all the boxers only need two wins to medal. Unfortunately for Bacyadan, the path to the gold will have to go through Asian Games gold medalist Li Qian of China, and then possibly World Champion Lovlina Borgohain of India. As if that’s not tough enough, World Championship silver medalist Caitlin Parker of Australia is also waiting on her side of the draw.

The other side of the bracket would have been a better path for Bacyadan as only Tammara Amanda Thibeault looks like a shoo-in podium finisher.

Nesthy Petecio – Women’s 57kg

“Walang hinto hangga’t walang ginto” has been the battlecry for Nesthy Petecio in Paris. Now she has a clear idea of the work she needs to put in to get there.

India’s Jaismine is her first opponent, a younger fighter she’s already sparred with in Saarbruken, Germany. Next would be hometown bet Amina Zidani, a World Championship bronze medalist.

Another win would most likely set Petecio up with her Tokyo 2020 victim Irma Testa of Italy, now the reigning World Champion. Kazakstan’s Karina Ibragimova, the World Championship silver medalist, could be Petecio’s semifinal opponent. 

Chinese Taipei’s lanky boxer Lin Yu-Ting will be heavily favored on the other side of the bracket.

Aira Villegas – Women’s 50kg

Avoiding two World Champions was a huge relief for Aira Villegas although this doesn’t necessarily guarantee immediate success. China’s Wu Yu, who won the World Championship in light flyweight before winning the Asian Games flyweight gold medal, will have an early meeting with her fellow World Champion Nikhat Zareen of India.

Villegas will take on Yasmine Mouttaki of Morroco, with the winner advancing against Roumaysa Boualam of Algeria. World Championship bronze medalist Wassila Lkhadiri of France will be the next challenge that will await Villegas if she wins her first two matches.

“Now that the draw is done, we can really focus our efforts of breaking down the opponents and building our game plan against them,” said Manalo.

“They’ve put in the work and they are excited to show the world what they can do here in Paris.”
